Misinformation & Corrections

Note: This section documents verified instances of misinformation that spread during media coverage of this incident, along with official corrections or clarifications.
Date Source False Claim Correction
2025-11-27 Channel 4 News (UK)
Interviewee: Dr. Xinyan HUANG 黃鑫炎
(PolyU Associate Professor)
Claim 1: "Fire engines from Mainland China came to Hong Kong to support fire rescue operations"

Claim 2: Fire spread from bottom to ~30 floors "in one or two minutes"

Claim 3: No city has aerial ladder trucks capable of reaching 100-200 meters
Facts:
1. HK Gov't confirmed to Yahoo News: Fire Services Dept "has not requested support from Mainland"

2. Dr. Huang later admitted this was "not based on detailed investigation"

3. 100m ladder trucks exist (including in Shenzhen); impractical in HK due to 10m road width requirement

Criticism of Clarification:
Dr. Huang's clarification cited the SFPE Foundation Report 2025, quoting that "bamboo, like wood, is combustible." However, critics noted the same report (p.14) also states that thick bamboo poles may potentially resist fire penetration: "Thin bamboo walls would be almost impossible to firestop as it would burn through, whilst it may be possible to provide resistance to penetrations through thick bamboo poles or laminated beams." Dr. Huang did not mention this nuance when the interviewer described scaffolding as "obviously highly flammable," nor did his clarification address the potential fire-resistant properties of thick bamboo.
