Prelude: 2025 Scaffolding Fires in Hong Kong

Before the Wang Fuk Court disaster, Hong Kong experienced a series of scaffolding-related fires throughout 2025:

January 2025
Scaffolding fire at an industrial building in Kwun Tong (觀塘工廈).
February 2025
Scaffolding fire at a construction site on Texaco Road, Tsuen Wan (荃灣德士古道).
April 2025
Scaffolding fire at Tsing Chuen Wai, Tuen Mun (屯門青磚圍).
May 2025
Construction site fire on Des Voeux Road West, Sai Wan (西環德輔道西).
July 2025
Scaffolding fire at King Sing Building, Wan Chai (灣仔景星大廈).
September 2025
Scaffolding fire at Fung Wah Estate, Chai Wan (柴灣峰華邨).

Construction site fire on Hiu Kwong Street, Sau Mau Ping (秀茂坪曉光街).
October 18, 2025
No. 3 Alarm fire at Chinachem Building scaffolding, Central (中環華懋大廈). 4 injured (3M, 1F; 1 serious). Buildings Department subsequently required review of scaffolding netting compliance.

Scaffolding fire at a construction site in Kai Tak (啟德地盤).

Scaffolding fire at HKU Sai Wan Hostel construction site (香港大學西苑宿舍).
November 26, 2025
No. 5 Alarm fire (highest level) at Wang Fuk Court, Tai Po (大埔宏福苑). Suspected flammable scaffolding netting. This incident.

November 26, 2025 (Day 1)

~2:51 PM
Fire breaks out. Scaffolding netting outside Wang Cheong House (宏昌閣) catches fire and produces thick smoke.
~2:53 PM
Fire spreads rapidly. Within minutes, flames spread from Wang Cheong House to other blocks via the scaffolding connecting the buildings.
3:01 PM
Firefighter HO Wai-ho (何偉豪), 37, from Sha Tin Fire Station arrives at the scene and begins rescue operations on the ground floor.
~3:30 PM
Contact lost with firefighter HO Wai-ho during rescue operations.
4:01 PM
Firefighter HO Wai-ho found in the open area outside Wang Cheong House with facial burns.
4:45 PM
Firefighter HO Wai-ho pronounced dead at Prince of Wales Hospital.
Evening
Fire continues to burn. 7 of 8 residential blocks affected. Only Wang Chi House (宏志閣) escapes the fire. Fire classified as No. 5 Alarm - the highest level.

November 27, 2025 (Day 2)

Throughout the day
Fire continues to burn. Firefighters work to contain and extinguish flames while rescue operations continue. Bodies begin to be recovered from the buildings.

November 28, 2025 (Day 3)

Fire largely extinguished after burning for approximately 43 hours and 27 minutes. Search and recovery operations continue.

November 28 onwards
Search and recovery operations continue across the 7 affected buildings. Estimated 3-4 weeks for full completion.
As of December 1, 2025
At least 151 confirmed dead. 79 hospitalized. 117 cases of missing/unknown status. 28 arrests made (Police: 13, ICAC: 12, National Security: 3).
